Clara Anne Graham, President of the League of Women Voters of Lee County invites League members and the public to learn about and discuss affordable housing issues and solutions in Lee County.  The League of Women Voters (LWV) has the conviction that every person and family should have decent, safe, and affordable housing.  The LWV supports policies and programs to provide a decent home and a suitable living environment for every American family, to prevent or reduce poverty and to promote self-sufficiency for individuals and families.

Affordable housing is a concern for many Lee County families.  In Lee County, households struggle to meet basic needs.  42% of Lee County’s 261,735 households live paycheck to paycheck and have no resources for emergencies according to the United Way ALICE Report.  The Florida Kids Count 2019 Florida Child Well-being Index shows Florida as 37th of 50 states and Lee County as 42nd of 67 Florida counties.

Community and government speakers will discuss Lee County residents’ housing needs and resources available including Sadowski Funds.

In 1992, the Sadowski Act created a dedicated source of revenue for housing from documentary stamp taxes in Florida.   One of the 2020 League of Women Voters of Florida Legislative Priorities is to mandate the use of all funds from the Sadowski Housing Trust Fund to be used solely for affordable housing.  Resources for additional information include:  Sadowski Housing Coalition https://www.sadowskicoalition.org/ and Florida Housing Coalition https://www.flhousing.org/
