Local School Councils: Get Involved
By Deborah Halpern
As reported recently at an LWV Chicago Saturday Briefing and the monthly Chicago Voter newsletter, Local School Councils bring the neighborhood to neighborhood schools. Elections will be held in April to fill positions on the council for every Chicago public school. As the sole authority for selecting and evaluating the school principal, approving an annual school improvement plan and helping develop and approve the school budget, Local School Councils are VERY important and powerful organizations; yet there is a critical lack of awareness of the LSC’s.
LWV Chicago wants to help increase the participation in both running for the LSC, attending LSC meetings and voting on the slate of nominees. We have sent a letter to every alderman requesting that he or she notify constituents of upcoming LSC elections. The League also encourages individuals who may be interested in serving on their school’s LSC to nominate themselves for election.
LWV Chicago will soon be sending out an Action Alert that members may use to contact their aldermen and remind them to inform constituents about the upcoming LSC elections. Watch for it—and take action.
