Candidates Night of Spring 2019 produced with FCTV

Voting is the central right and responsibility of every citizen in our democracy.  The charge of the Voter Service Committee is to encourage all citizens to vote and become active participants in their government and to provide citizens with unbiased, non-partisan, factual information that can be used in reaching their individual voting decisions.

  The Voter Service Committee:

  • Educates the public about local elections and local candidates.
  • Organizes Candidates Nights.
  • Organizes voter registration campaigns.
  • Makes available registration and voting information via brochures, public announcements, the League website, and participation in community events.

Some of the Voter Service Committee activities in the past year were:

  • Candidates Night prior to the 2018 mid-term elections.  Jointly sponsored by FCTV, the event included candidates for U.S. Congress, MA State Senate, Governor’s Council and Barnstable County Commission.
  • Spring Candidates Night prior to Town elections.  Co-sponsored by FCTV, this event provides a forum for candidates in contested races for Town office to present their positions and also encourages uncontested candidates to present themselves briefly to the audience.
  • Assisted the Town Clerk in November and April with checking in Town Meeting members and distributing their electronic devices.
  • Continued the tradition of offering voter registration and education to high-school seniors at their May graduation rehearsal.
  • Participated in Engage Falmouth’s January Volunteer Fair, “Cross-Pollinating” ideas with other civic organizations.

The committee would welcome new members.

In June 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that partisan gerrymandering is a political question because no fair test exists for courts to determine when partisan gerrymandering has gone too far.
