Register to Vote
Although you can register any time during the year, your form must be delivered or mailed at least 25 days before the next election for it to be effective for that election.
Voter Registration forms with prepaid postage are also available for pickup at the Board of Elections (find a BOE office in your county here), libraries, post offices, most New York City Government agencies, and the League of Women Voters of the City of New York. If you would like a registration form mailed to you, call the Board of Elections at 1-866-VOTE-NYC.
Fill out a Voter Registration Application using only a pen with blue or black ink. Be sure to sign the form.

Register in person at any of the Board of Elections offices throughout the five Boroughs Monday through Friday 9:00AM to 5:00PM:

If you have a New York State driver’s license or DMV-issued nondriver’s identification card, you can use New York’s MyDMV service to register to vote online.
To register to vote in the City of New York, you must:
- be a citizen of the United States (includes those persons born in Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands and naturalized citizens),
- be a New York City resident for at least 30 days by the time of election,
- be 18 years old by Dec. 31 of the year the registration is filed (note: you must be 18 years old by the date of the general, primary or other election in which you want to vote),
- not be serving a prison sentence or be on parole for a felony conviction,
- not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court, and
- not claim the right to vote elsewhere (outside the City of New York).
The "Help America Vote Act" (HAVA) which was enacted into law in 2002, requires all first time voters, who registered by mail on or after January 1, 2003, to provide additional identification either on or with the voter registration application, i.e., the driver's license number or the last four digits of your social security number.
If you do not have a driver's license or social security number, you may use a valid photo ID, a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check or some other government document that shows your name and address.
You may include a copy of one of those types of ID when you mail the Registration Form. If the Board of Elections is unable to verify your identity before Election Day, you will be asked for an ID when you vote for the first time.
You MUST update information such as a change in name, address, or party enrollment in order to stay registered to vote. MyDMV service allows you to update the information you have on file with the Board of Elections online. You may also update your information by mail, using a new voter registration form.
Updating Registration Dates
- June 5 Changes of address received by this date must be processed for the State Primary.
- Oct. 16 Changes of address received by this date must be processed in time for the General Election.
To vote in the Primary Election you must not only be registered to vote, but you must also be enrolled in an official political party recognized by the New York State Board of Elections. The Independence Party permits non-enrolled voters to participate in certain primary elections. In the state of New York, a political party is official as long as it has received 50,000 votes for Governor on its line.

Change of Party Enrollment
The voter registration form should be used to change your party enrollment from one party to another or to enroll for the first time in a party.
Please note: you cannot CHANGE your enrollment and vote in the NEW PARTY of your choice in the same year. A change of enrollment will go into effect one week following the General Election. The last day to change your enrollment for the following year’s primary is the same as the last day to register for the General Election (25 days prior to the date of the General Election). This means that it is too late to change your party enrollment for the 2018 primaries. The deadline to change your party enrollment and vote in your new party’s primary in 2019 is October 12, 2018.
